Fort Bend Independent School District protects students and employees against discrimination based on race, religion, color, age, national origin, sex, and disability. This policy fails to include sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression, thus leaving Fort Bend ISD students and employees at risk of discrimination, with no legal recourse. Nobody should have to fear discrimination in their learning or work environment.
We recommend that the Fort Bend ISD school board immediately votes to implement this model policy: “Students and parents should be aware that the Fort Bend Independent School District does not discriminate on the basis of age, race, color, ancestry, national origin, sex, handicap or disability, marital status, religion, veteran status, political affiliation, sexual orientation, gender identity and/or gender expression or physical/personal appearance.” As one of the most diverse school districts in Texas, Fort Bend ISD has a duty to celebrate, value, and protect diversity of all kinds. Every child should feel seen, heard, and affirmed at school, and every teacher/administrator should feel supported at work. LGBTQ students and teachers contribute to the dynamic diversity and rich culture of our school district, and we deserve equal rights and a learning environment free of discrimination.
